SUMMARY:A Seat At The Table Exhibit @ Sidney Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Sidney Museum and Archives is excited to announce the opening of its 2026 featured exhibit\, A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia. Developed by the Chinese Canadian Museum in partnership with the Museum of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia\, this exhibit will be on display from April 24-November 15\, 2026. \nA Seat at the Table examines Chinese immigration to this province as a story that is local and global\, historical and contemporary. Using food and restaurant culture as an entry point\, the exhibit features stories that point to the great diversity of immigrant experiences and of the communities that immigrants develop. \nA Seat at the Table sets the stage for moving stories of separation\, loss and alienation but also of solidarity\, tenacity and success. Animated maps\, short films\, and art installations show Chinese immigrants forging social connections with other migrant and Indigenous communities in British Columbia while maintaining ties with their relatives in China. These stories underscore the extent of systemic racism and its enduring impact on Chinese Canadians while highlighting their ability to resist\, organize\, seek justice and thrive. \nA Seat at the Table is one of the largest museum projects on Chinese Canadian history and culture in Canada to date. The research component includes an extensive and ongoing oral history project. The exhibition seeks to diversify representations of Canada and make them more inclusive. It also seeks to transform public understanding of Canada’s long engagement with the Pacific and successive waves of Chinese migration. Fresh perspectives on migration\, diaspora\, cultural representation and agency encourage the public to rethink what it means to be British Columbian. \nTo accompany this exhibit\, the Sidney Museum will be presenting displays representing aspects of Chinese Canadian history in Sidney\, North Saanich\, and the surrounding islands. Through recent research and oral history sessions\, the Sidney Museum has new perspectives and increased understandings to share about the substantial Chinese \nCanadian history in the region. From the long history of restaurants owned and operated by Chinese Canadian Sidney residents to the Chinatowns of Sidney and James Island in the early 20th century\, there will be much for those interested in local Chinese Canadian history to discover. \nThe Sidney Museum is located at 2423 Beacon Avenue\, in the lower level of the Old Post Office building. The museum is open everyday from 10:00am-4:00pm. Admission is by donation. Please visit sidneymuseum.ca for more details.

SUMMARY:The Atelier: The Studio of a Woman
DESCRIPTION:Show Times: 10am – 4pm\, daily May 15-21 \nExhibition Details: \nThe Experience: ‘The Atelier’ is an invitation into an immersive experience of art and creativity. Visitors will enter a space that delights and inspires. Surrounded by vignettes of easels\, art tools & materials and fresh flowers\, they will feel as though they have truly stepped into a woman’s private art studio. Paintings\, photographs and works on paper will be hung salon style\, while ‘cabinets of curiosities’ will display small sculptural works. Interactive creative stations\, designed to spark our guests’ imaginations\, will give them an opportunity to experience the pleasure of art-making. Visiting the show will be an interlude\, a sojourn to a bygone era of art and beauty. \nThe Art: The artwork will embody the essence of romanticism. Travel-inspired works integrate architecture and ancient ruins in a fresh style. Lush botanicals reminiscent of the Dutch Golden Age are given a modern twist. Seashells\, stones and other natural motifs evoke memories of travel and leisure time. Sculptures and assemblage pieces appear to hail from faraway places. Our intention is to invite visitors to connect with the part of themselves that longs to explore distant places and inspire them to ignite the creativity within themselves. \nParticipants: Michelle Ford & Lisa Edwards

SUMMARY:The Gondoliers Performance
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 16\, 2026 \nShowtime: 2:00pm \n\nDoors: 1:30pm\n\n\nThe Gondoliers (or The King of Barataria) is a Savoy Opera\, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London on 7 December 1889 and ran for a very successful 554 performances (at that time the fifth longest-running piece of musical theatre in history)\, closing on 30 June 1891. This was the twelfth comic opera collaboration of fourteen between Gilbert and Sullivan.\n\nThe story of the opera concerns brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri\, a pair of Venetian gondoliers who are told that one of them is heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Barataria; until it can be discovered by the Grand Inquisitor which of them is the heir\, they must rule jointly. Unbeknownst to the brothers\, who have just married Venetian girls\, the heir was wed in infancy to the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza-Toro\, who is herself in love with her father’s servant. A subplot concerns the impoverished Duke attempting to improve his finances by turning himself into a limited liability company. \n
