SUMMARY:Big Hank's Tribute to the Blues Songs of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Big Hank has his “Ho Ho working” and the highly regarded\, veteran bluesman and bandleader is certain “it’s going to work on you.” \nBig Hank has been touring his Blues Songs of Christmas show for a number of years now and this unique\, variety filled program of blues-basted Yuletide tunes is one that has left audiences drenched in the Christmas spirit and coming back for more when the next holiday season rolls around. \nTouring from Vancouver Island to the snowbound prairies of Alberta\, this Christmas show has consistently tied together a variety of classic blues styles\, some r&b and a touch of soul. Blues Songs of Christmas is a show where every song puts a different spin on the season and everything that goes with “the most wonderful time of the year.” \nHe’s armed with a muscular voice\, one that can be as warm as the hearth surrounding a well-stoked winter fire\, and one that can alternately rattle the rafters and shake the snow off a 30 foot Christmas tree. \nThis refreshing take on holiday concerts finds the singer and his talented\, veteran band rolling through music that includes tunes going back a century to Christmas blues tunes that have been favourites of the boomer generation that grew up listening to B.B. King and Eric Clapton. \nTunes from the books of Big Joe Turner\, Charles Brown\, Etta James and Louis Jordan also find their way into the festive mix that has received rave reviews. \nIt’s been quite the road for Big Hank who cut his teeth on the prairie cabaret circuit early on in his career. He immersed himself in the blues with two of the best blues bands to have come out of western Canada in the seventies and eighties\, those being the Edmonton-based Hot Cottage and Victoria’s Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band. The latter group signed with RCA\, sold an impressive number of albums and opened for the greats like Muddy Waters\, Joe Cocker\, James Cotton\, Paul Butterfield and Koko Taylor. \nHis love of blues has also been the foundation of acts like The Toasters\, A Fistful of Blues and The Kingpins that were also regional favourites. \n“The Big Hank Christmas Blues show has been one of the most unique seasonal roots music shows on the road\,\nand it gets more impressive with each passing year. It’s a hot show for the coolest season\, and most wonderful time of the year.”\nPeter North\nRoots Music Journalist \nThe Kingpins are:\nBig Hank Lionhart – Vocals / Steve Cross – Guitar / Mick Woodhouse – Bass / Any Graffiti – Drums / Steve Ranta – Keys / Paul Wainwright – Sax \nSome of the songs on the set list:\nLonesome Christmas Blues – Blind Blake\nCryin Christmas Tears – Eric Clapton\nPlease Come Home for Christmas – Charles Brown\nBlue Decorations – BB King\nI Told Santa  – Fats Domino\nGood Mornin Blues – Room Fun of Blues\nChristmas Date Boogie – Big Joe Turner\nSanta Claus Santa Claus – Louis Jordan\nChristmas Comes But Once a Year – Amos Milburn\nEveryday will be like a Holiday – William Bell\nPlease Let me be your Santa Claus – William Clarke\nMerry Christmas Baby – Etta James\nPlus a number of original songs

SUMMARY:Burns Night 2023: The Bard & His Ballads
DESCRIPTION:Proof of second vaccine required for anyone over the age of 12\, along with government issued ID for those 19+. \nSince the first Burns Dinner in 1801\, people have gathered to pay homage to this great Scottish Bard. \nJoin songsmith Bruce Coughlan with special guests Daniel Lapp\, fiddle & piano and René Cusson\, pipes & whistles and celebrate BURNS NIGHT 2023. \nRobbie Burns (1759-1796) in his own time was a man of modest means\, spending most of his life an impoverished tenant farmer. But Burns possessed “mither wit and native fire” and his own words reveal much about the man\, his humility\, humanity\, passion\, compassion\, humour & insight. \nProgramme selections include the Bard’s greatest hits: Westlin Winds\, Auld Lang Syne\, Ae Fond Kiss\, A Man’s A Man and of course\, Address to a Haggis! \nMeet Burns Night Performers 2023\nBruce Coughlan is a Canadian songwriter and recording artist residing in British Columbia. He sports an extensive repertoire spanning an array of musical genres including Celtic\, Bluegrass\, Americana\, Folk\, Maritime\, Blues & more. Bruce has performed across Canada and in 38 USA states and has toured the United Kingdom on a dozen occasions. Since recording his first LP in 1984\, he has recorded 14 albums of his original and adapted traditional music across a broad range of the roots music genre. Bruce might be best recognised for his historically based ballads\, written on Pacific Canadian themes. He has been the composer and lead singer of Tiller’s Folly for over two decades. \nRené Cusson is renowned throughout the piping world as a musician\, competitive piper\, performer\, teacher\, adjudicator and composer. His music is performed all over the Celtic world and has been widely recorded at home and abroad. Added to his playing of various bagpipes is whistle playing and singing. He is presently completing a book of his compositions to be launched in Glasgow soon. \nDaniel Lapp is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who’s amazing 30-year musical journey has carried him across Europe\, Australia\, China\, Israel\, the USA and Canada performing with artists as diverse as Spirit of the West\, Rickie Lee Jones\, 54-40\, Gord Downie\, Barney Bentall\, Jim Byrnes\, Jim Cuddy\, Elvis Costello\, Lou Reed\, Stephen Fearing\, Ed Robertson and Roy Forbes.
