DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live video call at sea\, with scientists and engineers onboard the CanPac Valour as they explore the seafloor off BC’s coast! Part of the NorthEast Pacific Deep-sea Exploration Project (NEPDEP)\, this expedition will be mapping the seafloor with an echosounder and using a remotely operated vehicle called Mantis to record real-time footage of the seafloor\, including at underwater mountains near Haida Gwaii and in the new Tang.ɢ̲wan · ḥačxʷiqak · Tsig̱is Marine Protected Area off the west coast of Vancouver Island. These areas are hotspots for marine biodiversity\, with nurseries of eggs\, glass sponge reefs\, seafloor venting\, and new species being discovered all the time. \nThis expedition is a collaboration between Fisheries and Oceans Canada\, Council of the Haida Nation\, Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council\, Royal BC Museum\, University of Victoria\, and Ocean Networks Canada. \nIn this live event\, you are invited to ask questions directly to those at sea. You will learn about marine life\, why the ecosystems are important\, the sophisticated technology they’re using\, and what life onboard the vessel is like.
