SUMMARY:Tonye Aganaba Performance
DESCRIPTION:Tonye Aganaba\, is a Black African queer\, disabled and non-binary immigrant and uninvited settler living on the unceded ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. They were born in London\, England – the belly of the beast and the stronghold of imperialism\, colonialism and racial capitalism\, and immigrated to so-called Canada at the age of 13. They proudly trace their ancestral line to the lands known today as Nigeria and Zimbabwe. \nTonye is an interdisciplinary artist and musician – and their style is dynamic and fluid – weaving playful threads of Soul\, Neo-Folk\, Funk\, Hip-Hop and R&B. Their shows\, gatherings\, and workshops are connected and intimate experiences\, and evoke a kind of vulnerability that we all hunger for. \n

SUMMARY:I Don't Belong Here Performance
DESCRIPTION:Mary Winspear Centre Presenters Series\nI Don’t Belong Here – Stories and Songs at the Edge of Forgetting \n\n\nWednesday\, January 21\, 2026 – 7:30 PM\n\n\n\nDoors: 7:00pm\nShowtime: 7:30pm\n\nWritten by and featuring Joëlle Rabu and Kelly Wyatt \nDirected by Kymme Patrick\nMusic Director/Arranger – Nico Rhodes \n“I Don’t Belong Here – Stories and Songs at the Edge of Forgetting” is a poignant and powerfully human stage production that explores life inside a dementia care facility through a minimalist theatrical lens\, adaptable to both small and larger stages. Told through a carefully composed sequence of 15 vignettes and supported by song\, the production brings to life 22 distinct characters: memory-care residents navigating shifting realities and blurred recollections; visiting family members grappling with guilt\, grief\, and the complex emotions of anticipated loss; and compassionate care aides who bear daily witness to the slow unravelling of memory\, working to preserve dignity\, spark laughter\, and nurture connection. \nThis intimate three-person ensemble piece balances emotional gravity with flashes of absurdity and unexpected levity\, illuminating the often surreal and surprisingly tender moments that surface at the edge of forgetting. \nBut don’t let the subject matter fool you – this is not a bleak tale. The script deftly weaves vulnerability with humour\, sorrow with song\, and reflection with resilience\, ultimately offering a deeply affirming meditation on love\, loss\, and the enduring power of human connection. \nContent Warning:  This play respectfully and candidly depicts the various forms of dementia. Some scenes contain strong language\, emotional trauma and sexual references. While there is music\, humour and heart throughout\, this play is recommended for mature audiences.

SUMMARY:Scientist-in-Residence: Canadian Antarctic Research Expedition 2025
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 20\, 2026. From: 2pm-3pm \n\n\n\nJoin our Scientist-In-Residence Dr. Sophia Johannessen for an illustrated talk about… \nScience at The Bottom Of The World: The Canadian Antarctic Research Expedition 2025 \nIn the spring of 2025\, fifteen Canadian scientists spent a month in Antarctica\, aboard the Canadian navy ship HMCS Margaret Brooke. It was an extraordinary trip: spectacular\, fascinating and strange. The mission was science diplomacy. The scientists were there to investigate the effects of climate change on the coastal waters of Antarctica… but that was only part of the story. \nDr. Sophia Johannessen is a geochemical oceanographer at Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Institute of Ocean Sciences in North Saanich. She studies the effects of climate change and other human activities on the coastal ocean. Her recent projects include studies of the change in productivity in the Salish Sea\, the fate of diluted bitumen spilled in BC coastal waters\, and the potential for “blue carbon” storage in seagrass meadows for climate change mitigation. She works mainly in the coastal waters of British Columbia\, but she has also worked in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and most recently in the coastal waters of Antarctica.
