SUMMARY:St Paul's presents - Reid Jamieson Band
DESCRIPTION:REID JAMIESON & CVM\n– singer songwriter duo – Vancouver BC \n \n\n“Gorgeous\, sun-struck acoustic soul”- Globe & Mail \n“Prepare to be surprised” – Vancouver Province\nLISTEN: Best of Reid Jamieson: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2N3lamQmYCqb5V8RqD9phs?si=21bfb57d256740a3 \nABOUT: Vancouver’s Reid Jamieson & CVM are a vocal powerhouse making music that matters and moves us. With an incredible voice\, spirited guitar playing\, and a magical way with melodies\, Reid is that rare songbird whose originals are every bit as compelling as his interpretations. In years past\, Reid was a regular on CBC’s Vinyl Café\, has recorded with Cowboy Junkies\, and performed with Mary Margaret O’Hara\, members of Blue Rodeo\, Be Good Tanyas and more. A classic introvert/extrovert combo\, Reid shines alongside his saucy wife and long-time songwriting partner Carolyn Victoria Mill\, where their unique harmonies and swapping of lead vocals make for an eclectic\, entertaining\, and sometimes heartbreaking variety show. Together they won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and wrote their way in to the Vancouver Folk Festival by winning 1st place in their Pickin’ a Folk Star contest. Tireless promoters of voting\, equality\, and love\, they thrive on creating intimacy\, causing tears and laughter in equal measures. Their latest all original album ‘Me Daza’ was recorded in Ireland with producer Kieran Kennedy (Maria Doyle Kennedy) which features the posthumous vocals of Fergus O’Farrell (Interference\, Once). There is nothing traditional about the record – or this dynamic duo. 2023 saw them launch an all original folk opera about Pigeons(!) and the causes of housing insecurity\, premiering it at the Vancouver Fringe Fest where they took home the prestigious Social Impact Award. Following up on tributes to Leonard Cohen\, John Lennon\, 50/60s era gold\, and what could be mistaken for a simple holiday record\, they are currently getting ready to release the first ever tribute to Buffy Sainte-Marie. You won’t want to miss what they do next…\nVenue: St Paul’s United Church 2410 Malaview Ave\, Sidney BC V8L 2G3\nFree parking on site and wheelchair accessible.\nDoors open at 1:30pm\nTickets: $25. SUMMARY:James Keelaghan & Jez Lowe
DESCRIPTION:A chance-meeting at a folk festival almost thirty years ago has led to a musical collaboration between two singer-songwriters\, James Keelaghan from Canada and Jez Lowe from England\, that has seen them play to audiences around the globe\, from North America to Australia and to Europe\, and which continues to this day. \nEvery couple of years they each take a break from their busy solo careers to share stages and songs and inspire each other with their voices\, their wit and a friendship that lights up each performance. The pair share an Irish heritage that certainly informs their writing and brings with it an enthusiasm for boundary-breaking and story-telling in song that is both infectious and enthralling\, timeless and contemporary\, unpredictable and yet focused. In other words\, they surely and inevitably bring the best out of each other. \nJames Keelaghan\nCalled Canada’s finest singer-songwriter by one of the most respected and lauded music journalists of the last 50 years\, James Keelaghan is an artist who has proven to be a man for all seasons. As the calendar pages have turned\, for almost a quarter of a century now\, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion\, intent and intensity\, and curiosity. Fusing his insatiable appetite for finding the next unique storyline Keelaghan also forges his pieces with brilliantly defined craftsmanship and a monogrammed artistic vision\, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices of not only the Canadian scene\, but as a member of the international singer-songwriter community. \nJames Keelaghan \n \nJez Lowe\nOver the past four decades\, Jez Lowe has been one of the UK’s busiest singer-songwriters\, playing for audiences the world over\, either solo\, (with guitar\, cittern\, mandolin and harmonica accompaniment)\, or with his long-time band The Bad Pennies. He has taken his songs of North-East England to concerts and festivals all across Europe\, Canada and the USA\, as well as building a sizeable following in Australia and New Zealand. Along the way he has gathered a long list of awards and nominations\, including from the BBC Folk Awards and the Sony Radio Awards. His pace and enthusiasm for writing\, performing and touring shows no sign of waning.

SUMMARY:Royal Wood & Jeffery Straker - The Piano Men Tour 2024
DESCRIPTION:Royal Wood\nSinger\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and producer Royal Wood has established himself as a true musical talent. Since being proclaimed “Songwriter of the Year” by iTunes (2010)\, Wood has continued to evolve and hone his musical craft while maintaining a unique identity. With his eighth full-length studio album\, 2022’s What Tomorrow Brings\, Wood reaches new emotional depths and delivers his most powerful collection of music to date. “Although it was finished before the pandemic even began\, the time I had during those unpredictable years allowed me to dig deep and fine-tune the album in a way I’ve never been able to before. I know\, without a doubt\, this is the best work of my career.” \nRoyal Wood has received multiple JUNO nominations\, 5 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations\, and a #1 added song at Hot AC. Having seen high-profile features on programs such as Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice\, his catalogue has amassed over 15 million streams worldwide. Most recently\, Danish manufacturer VELUX utilized the 2007 single “A Good Enough Day” in a promotional campaign\, generating a surge of newfound fans across Europe. Capturing the same sonic and emotional depth of these recordings\, Wood translates his songs into astounding live performances. This live prowess has led to performances in world-class venues and support-billing for globally-celebrated artists such as Bonnie Raitt and David Gray. \nFollowing a headline performance at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall\, Royal Wood released his latest album\, What Tomorrow Brings\, in November 2022. Crafted alongside world-renowned producers Linda Perry (Adele\, Alicia Keys\, Christina Aguilera) and Jamie Scott (Ed Sheeran\, Justin Bieber)\, the album draws from deeply personal points in Wood’s life\, effectively capturing the emotion of these moments. “During the writing of this album\, I lost a parent\, fell in love\, got married and became a father. These experiences definitely allowed me to write from a place of pure vulnerability and create the most carefully crafted and inspired lyrics of my career.” \nWhat Tomorrow Brings has received critical praise and support across both Radio and Digital Streaming Platforms. Respective singles have featured on Sirius XM’s North Americana and Stingray Radio’s Adult Alternative\, Pop Adult\, and Canadian Indie. Digitally\, singles have seen placements on various editorial playlists such as Spotify’s New Music Friday Canada\, Every Day Favourites\, Contemporary Blend\, indie pop & chill\, Folk & Friends; Apple Music’s New In Singer/Songwriter\, Breaking Singer-Songwriter\, and New in Singer-Songwriter; and Amazon Music’s Brand New Music\, Fresh Folk & Acoustic\, and Finely Tuned. Alongside the release of What Tomorrow Brings\, Wood also granted fans a behind-the-scenes look into the album with a Mini-documentary that premiered via Exclaim!. Now\, along with an opening slot on Bonnie Raitt’s upcoming tour\, Royal Wood continues to expand on the success of What Tomorrow Brings\, approaching 200\,000 Monthly Listeners on Spotify and garnering fans from around the world. \nJeffery Straker\nSinger-songwriter pianist Jeffery Straker grew up taking piano lessons in small-town Saskatchewan and has gone on to perform over 100 shows per year across Canada\, Europe and Latin America. The rootsy-storytelling of his songs has the power to transport a listener – out onto a lake in Canada’s North or to the main street of a prairie town. A clever lyricist with an energetic approach to the piano\, his song writing has drawn critical comparisons to the likes of Harry Chapin\, Kris Kristofferson & Billy Joel while maintaining a style distinctly his own. He’s recorded his roots/folk music for CBC radio’s ‘Canada Live’\, has seen his songs used in film\, TV and theatrical productions and in 2019 won a Western Canadian Music Award. Recently he was awarded “Roots/Folk Artist of the Year” at both the 2020 & 2021 Saskatchewan Music Awards and saw the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards name him “Keyboard Player of the Year” 3 years running. \nA musical vagabond\, he’s toured internationally as far as The Netherlands\, Mexico and Nunavut with tour stops ranging from intimate house concerts to theatre shows and festivals. Never one to let genre constrain him he’s also taken the stage in sold-out concerts performing his songs with symphony orchestras. International highlights include winning the prestigious Vina del Mar (Chile) song competition\, representing Canada while performing to a festival crowd of 20\,000 people and a TV audience of 100\,000\,000 viewers across the Spanish-speaking world. He also recently performed across the UK (Nov 2022) including a stop at Canada’s High Commission in London. \nJeffery’s 2017 12-song recording\, “Dirt Road Confessional” dove deep into his personal storytelling style and debuted at #5 on the iTunes Canada singer-songwriter charts. It played on CBC Radio and college/community radio across the country with listeners and critics taking note. The Chicago Free Press wrote: “Rufus Wainwright\, as well as k.d. lang are among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music. Add the name Jeffery Straker to that list”. \nStraker’s 2021 full-length album “Just Before Sunrise” was produced by Russell Broom (Calgary AB). The recording strikes a reflective and optimistic tone with many of the songs written in the wake of the sudden & unexpected passing of Jeffery’s mom. Two co-writes with Royal Wood feature on the recording. The launch was celebrated with a 6-show national virtual tour and a 55 date Covid-friendly “Pandemic-Piano-Backyard-Tour” crossing the country in summer 2021. The album was voted #2 in the Saskatchewan Music Awards. \n“Direct\, honest and sure-handed\, there’s a magic to Straker’s folk-based piano styling and powerful storytelling…a brand of contagion well worth catching” (The Walleye/Just Before Sunrise) \nJeffery has just emerged from the studio with his latest recording which will release in early 2024 (date TBC). Working with roots/americana producer Steve Dawson (Nashville) the album delivers a roots/country flavour. \nA classically trained pianist\, Straker swears he was born under the piano on the family grain farm. He was raised by a church-organist mother and auctioneer father which might explain his natural ability to share songs with audiences. He was a student of the Royal Conservatory of Music and received his licentiate diploma in piano performance from Trinity College\, London when he was only 19. SUMMARY:The Arrogant Worms
DESCRIPTION:The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio\, the internet\, and in outer space on the space shuttle Endeavour. The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when members of the student cabaret group\, The Queen’s Players\, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station\, CFRC. One day they send off a cassette of their song “Canadian Crisis Song” to the CBC radio show Basic Black. To their surprise the show decided to play the song. All they needed to know was the name of the group—eventually they came up with one: The Arrogant Worms. \nThe Worms began as a four-piece group consisting of Steve Wood\, John Whytock\, Mike McCormick\, and Trevor Strong. They played any place that would have them—bars\, street corners\, fringe festivals—as they slowly developed their signature style of “singing songs and yammering on” that would make them the mildest form of famous. They released their first album\, cleverly titled “The Arrogant Worms” in 1992 which contained the song\, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate\, which has since been covered by groups including Captain Tractor and The Longest Johns. Steve Wood departed soon after the release of the album\, making the group a Trio. \nIn the following years the Worms toured relentlessly across Canada\, often crossing the county multiple times in a year\, first in Mike’s Plymouth Horizon\, and then in their brand-new Chrysler mini-van (which were all the rage at the time). Their second release\, Russell’s Shorts\, came out in 1994 and contained the song\, Carrot Juice is Murder\, which became the number one song on the Doctor Demento Show in 1995. Later that year they released their third album C’est Cheese\, which also marked the departure of John Whytock from the group due to his desire to have some sort of life. \nDeciding to remain a trio\, Mike and Trevor searched intensely\, but briefly\, for a new member. Soon Chris Patterson\, who they knew from the Queen’s Players\, joined the group\, adding a much-needed element of dance to the stage show. From there\, their slow rise continued unabated\, and soon they were playing theatres instead of bars and making main stage appearances at folk festivals across Canada. Since then\, they have played Parliament Hill on Canada Day\, a wedding at the Grand Canyon\, and with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra—a show that was recorded and released on DVD. \nNow\, over three decades into a career where they have released 13 albums\, they still create—putting out a new song every month on their Patreon page. The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.
