SUMMARY:Bruce Granville Miller- Oral Histories on Trial
DESCRIPTION:Oral Traditions are at the heart of Indigenous societies and in some instances provide crucial information regarding rights to land\, water\, and fishing/hunting. The Canadian Supreme Court has said that oral history has the same footing as written history but the Crown has consistently disputed oral history as evidence in court. In this talk\, based on my book\, Oral History on trial: Recognizing Aboriginal Narratives in the Courts\, I will describe what distinguished oral historians have taught me about their work and how I have used this information to dispute Crown critiques of oral history evidence both in court and in writing. First Nations have continued in their efforts to reframe their place in Canada through litigation (and other means) and I consider successful uses of oral history evidence.

The anticipation builds as the first single\, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco\,” a signature Bennett classic\, hits Spotify and iTunes on February 14\, 2024. \nDusk\, having previously graced stages across North America and Europe with sold-out performances\, announces his return to Western Canada for a 13-date tour. Titled The Best Is Yet to Come: Dusk Sings Bennett\, the show promises to captivate audiences with Dusk’s exceptional vocal range and pay tribute to the enduring legacy of Tony Bennett. \nA lifelong admirer of Bennett\, Dusk fondly recalls their friendship formed in the Las Vegas showroom\, where the late crooner shared invaluable career advice. Stepping on stage with a smokin’ band\, performing these timeless hits\, is about the music\, the musicians\, and the memories from the man who was swingin’ in every era.” \nWith sixteen critically acclaimed studio albums and over one million albums sold worldwide\, Matt Dusk is a Canadian icon. Recognized for hits like “All About Me\,” “Back in Town\,” and “Good News\,” Dusk holds three gold albums and three platinum albums\, earning him five JUNO award nominations. SUMMARY:Surfacing
DESCRIPTION:So often in life we go through crests and valleys precipitated by many different things. Sometimes our artistic endeavors can be a sign to see these changes coming or going and often are our life preservers. The clarity we strive for again and again can be like surfacing from a deep slumber. \nSo too is the plane of our canvas or paper an ever-evolving experiment in creating a meaningful surface. One that gives the maker deep satisfaction and challenges the creators expectations. This pursuit itself is the companion that rarely fails us in times of joy or changes. So here we have three friends\, companions along the way who\, while individually are striving to comprehend their paths\, have enjoyed and benefitted from the company of each other’s humour and wisdom. \nFeaturing the work of Susan Wintrop\, Philippa Tattersall\, and Nora Layard

SUMMARY:Shalene Wuttune Jobin- What does it mean to uphold indigenous economic relationship?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative conversation with Dr. Shalene Wuttunee Jobin who shares the intersections of settler colonialism and economic exploitation in the region known today as Canada. We’ll learn how economic advancement is intertwined with the exploitation of indigenous communities and what indigenous worldviews can teach us about miyo‐pimâtisiwin ᒥᔪ ᐱᒫᑎᓯᐃᐧᐣ (the good life) and harmonious econimic relationships. Dr. Jobin draws inspiration from the profound knowledge systems of the nehiyawak ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐊᐧᐠ (Cree) people and will underscore two pivotal arguments: the foundational relationship between settlers and Indigenous populations was one of economic exploitation\, and that Indigenous economic ties are constitutive and deeply rooted in connections to Land\, Water\, and the intricate web of life they sustain. In this talk Dr. Jobin offers insight that enable us to reimagine how we can aspire to the good life with all our relations.
