Sidney Museum

Tucked into the lower level of the historic Olde Post Office Building on Beacon Avenue, the Sidney Museum is a charming community gem that punches well above its size. Established in 1971, the museum’s mandate is to acquire, preserve, and share the heritage, culture, and history of the Saanich Peninsula — and it does so with warmth and depth that visitors consistently find surprising.

The permanent collection covers the full human history of Sidney and the North Saanich Peninsula — from the First Nations peoples of the region, through settler families, early economic development, the arrival of the railway, the impact of the World Wars, and the growth of the Town of Sidney. Highlights include a recreated railway station, Critchley’s Store, and the Barn. The emphasis throughout is on everyday life — how real people lived, worked, and shaped the community over generations.

In addition to the permanent galleries, the museum features rotating exhibits throughout the year. The most beloved is the annual LEGO® Brick Exhibition — running January through March, both floors of the museum are transformed into a display of hundreds of LEGO sets, from pirates to castles, science fiction to fantasy, and everything in between. It’s a genuine draw for families and worth timing a visit around.

The museum is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, closed only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Admission is free by donation. Plan 30 to 60 minutes, and note that the museum is larger than it appears from the street — the layout spans two levels.

The main entrance is down a short staircase off Beacon Avenue. For elevator access, use the rear entrance off Fourth Street. Free two-hour street parking is available along Beacon Avenue, with three-hour lots nearby at Fourth and Sidney Avenue and at Third and Bevan Avenue.
