The Foodie’s Afternoon in Sidney

Sidney’s culinary scene is incredibly diverse, with restaurants, pubs and cafes that serve up dishes crafted around ingredients from the sea and local farms. If you’ve only got an afternoon to delight your palate, the hardest part may be just narrowing down the choices!

Might we suggest starting your afternoon with Italian flair at The Fickle Fig bakery and bistro? Their farm location near the airport is a delightful spot to sample sandwiches, Italian-inspired baked goods and freshly made gelato. (You can also sample a large selection of gelato from Fickle Fig’s newest location right on Beacon Avenue.)

While you’re there, try a beer flight from Howl Brewing, located in the same building. Choose from seasonal beers featuring ingredients like blackberries and figs, or sample traditional beer styles brought back from nearly obsolete historic recipes.

More of a wine and cheese lover? Enjoy a wine and cheese flight at The Farmer’s Daughter fromagerie, bistro and wine bar, where you can sample the finest cheeses from around the world, paired with a charcuterie board if you’re extra nibbly.

The Surly Mermaid also serves delicious charcuterie boards featuring Farmer’s Daughter cheeses. Here, you can enjoy a varied menu crafted around local ingredients, including fanciful cocktails crafted with Empress 1908 Gin made next door at the Victoria Distillers.

For dinner, choose from international flavours, including Thai, Indian, Greek, Chinese, Mexican and French. Fish and chips fans will love Fish On Fifth and Fish O Chips; plus there are several pubs in town that serve up all manner of traditional favourites, often with live music and fresh seafood. Fine dining doesn’t get much better than at the Deep Cove Chalet, offering French cuisine and overlooking the picturesque cove it’s named after, or the intimate Sea Glass Waterfront Grill perched right on the docks of Tsehum Harbour. You’ll go home happy, full, and dreaming of your next visit.
