Annual Polar Bear Swim

Start the New Year with a splash at Sidney’s annual Polar Bear Swim, a beloved community tradition that brings together brave locals and visitors for an invigorating dip in the Salish Sea.

Held at Glass Beach, at the foot of Beacon Avenue, this festive event is equal parts challenge, celebration, and community gathering. Whether you’re taking the plunge or cheering from the shore, it’s a fun and memorable way to welcome 2027 alongside fellow hardy islanders.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early, dress warmly, and bring a towel and a change of clothes. Spectators are welcome to enjoy the excitement from the beach as swimmers count down to the refreshing New Year’s Day plunge.

Hosted by the Peninsula Celebrations Society, this long-running event reflects the organization’s commitment to creating memorable community experiences that bring people together throughout the year. The volunteer-led non-profit is best known for organizing many of the Peninsula’s signature celebrations, helping foster community spirit and local pride across the Saanich Peninsula.
